In Venice, the regeneration of an island: the landscape of the lagoon and early twentieth-century architecture

On one of the largest islands in the lagoon, 16 hectares of gardens and orchards, between 2011 and 2015 the studio of Matteo Thun & Partners designed and realized the first resort in Italy (the sixth in Europe) of the prestigious international brand of hospitality JV Marriott.

Besides the deluxe hotel with its 260 rooms, suites, holiday homes (including an elegant villa with swimming-pool on the edge of the lagoon), the five-star complex houses the largest wellness centre in Venice (1,750 sqm), a conference centre, four restaurants, two bars and several swimming-pools.

From the masterplan to the renovation of the existing listed buildings

Matteo Thun worked in parallel on different levels in order to achieve the utmost harmony with the surrounding landscape of the lagoon and to create the image of the resort: from the masterplan to the detailed architectonic solutions.

This intervention enhances the character of every building; the pavilions of the ex-hospital, the church, the manager’s house, the boathouses, the ex-warehouses, the recreation/after work area.

The strong points are the view towards Venice and the relationship created between the interiors, comfortable and elegant, and the green spaces: doors, windows, enormous panoramic panels of glazing with different solutions for each façade and for each building go to make up the theme developed for this project by Secco Sistemi, with all the added complications of conservative restoration restricted by the constraints placed on listed buildings, besides being in the midst of the brackish, corrosive water and air of the lagoon.

Respect for the environment and refined elegance: selection of the finest materials and finishes

A structure designed for hospitality of this importance requires the most efficient performance in terms of environmental impact, and not only this. The finest products for quality and aesthetic aspect but also with respect for the environment were chosen for the building materials and for the furnishings: glazing, mirrors, fabrics all represent the very best of local craftsmanship, as for the brickwork, tiling and fixtures. Many Secco Sistemi products were selected and implemented in the creating of this resort on the Isola delle Rose, to meet the various requirements of the project: EBE 65, EBE 85 AS lift-and-slide, OS2 , 4F, all in painted galvanized steel.

The efficiency of the performance and quality of the materials combines once again with the versatility of Secco Sistemi’s approach towards the challenges proposed by a quality architectural project.
